Lukko grabbed a defensive giant from North America – “It has size and looks”
Lukko strengthens its defense with a large Canadian defenseman. The club announced on Tuesday that it has signed a one-year contract with Chris Harpur, 29.
Lukko’s sports director Kalle Sahlstedt revealed that Harpur had been on the club’s radar earlier.
– Harpur was on our radar last season around the turn of the year. We were close back then, but he continued to the end of the season in the AHL and ECHL. Fortunately, after the season, we were able to agree on things and get the defenseman to Rauma, Sahlstedt tells on Lukko’s website.
The 190-centimeter tall defenseman holds both Canadian and Australian passports. Last season, Harpur played 18 games with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, recording 0+2 points, and also played 19 games in the ECHL with 0+3 points.
Lukko knows well what kind of player is arriving in Rauma. It’s pointless to expect point production from the Canadian.
– He has size and presence, and will provide a certain kind of foundation to our defense. He certainly won’t be a point machine or an especially flashy player, but he is a top-notch team player with the right attitude, Sahlstedt states.
– He will definitely make sure that the number one priority is to keep our goal clean. And he will also take responsibility on the penalty kill, Sahlstedt adds.
The Harpur hockey family is familiar to many by another name, as defenseman brother Ben Harpur has played over 200 games in the NHL.
