JYP player trades – catching a Finnish prospect from North America!
JYP has signed a two-year contract with defender Veeti Väisänen. The contract runs until the spring of 2028.
Väisänen, 20, has played the last two seasons in the Canadian junior league WHL, representing the Medicine Hat Tigers. In the past season, he recorded 23 points in 47 regular season games with 6+17=23 and 5 points in 15 playoff games with 1+4. A year ago, Väisänen won the WHL championship with the team.
Before his North American seasons, Väisänen played for KooKoo in the Liiga. In the 2023-24 season, he played 50 games for the Kouvola team, scoring 10 points with 2+8=10.
Väisänen is a familiar name from the Young Lions. He has participated in the last two under-20 World Championships, achieving a silver medal.
Väisänen is a 3rd round draft pick (#96) of the Utah Mammoth from 2024.
– Väisänen is already an experienced and very mobile modern defenseman for his age. In addition to defensive play, he can also support his team’s offensive play, says JYP’s sports director Simo Mälkiä in the club’s announcement.
Väisänen’s season in the WHL recently ended in the semifinals.
– The seasons in the WHL were very educational and a good experience for me. I got to play a lot and experience a slightly different style of hockey, Väisänen says.
