JYP has signed a two-year contract with Danish defender Malte Setkov.

Setkov, 27, arrives at JYP from the Danish top league, where he represented the Rodovre Mighty Bulls. Last season, Setkov recorded 32 points with 13 goals and 19 assists in 44 regular season games, as well as 2 goals and 4 assists in five playoff games.

The 203-centimeter and 101-kilogram Setkov is a familiar face in the Danish national team. He also represented his country in the February Olympics, recording one assist in four games.

– Setkov is a large and very mobile all-round defender. His size and especially Malte’s reach add strengths to the defense, JYP’s sports director Simo Mälkiä describes in the club’s statement.

– We have been following him for a while, and Malte performed well in the Olympics. I believe the time is now ripe for Malte to take the next step, and his best playing years are still ahead, so it’s great that we got him to Jyväskylä, Mälkiä continues.

In his career, Setkov has also played in Sweden, both in the SHL and Allsvenskan.

Setkov will join JYP’s roster in August when the team’s foreign players arrive for training.
