Jokerit made a splash with a new acquisition: A defender giant who left HIFK has been caught.
Jokerit, returning to the League next season, announced a new player acquisition on Monday.
The Helsinki club reports that it has signed a contract for the remainder of the season with defender Matias Rajaniemi, 23. The contract includes an option for the next season.
– Matias is a versatile defender with plenty of experience in tough leagues. We wanted to further strengthen our defense, as this ongoing season is extremely important for us. Our goal is to win the championship, and we are investing in the team accordingly, commented sports director Olli-Pekka Yrjänheikki on the recent acquisition on Jokerit’s website.
Rajaniemi is a product of Pelicans, and despite his young age, he has already played over 200 Liiga games. The 193-centimeter tall defenseman has represented Pelicans, SaiPa, and HIFK at the Liiga level. This season, Rajaniemi has played 11 games in the Liiga wearing the HIFK jersey.
Last season, Rajaniemi tried his wings in North America and has represented the Young Lions in two under-20 World Championships, bringing home a silver and a bronze medal.
