The possible return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships received a stern response from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association.

IIHF announced on Saturday that it would begin to investigate the reinstatement of Russia in international tournaments. This is based on the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which the IIHF must act upon.

However, it was made clear from Finland that facing Russia is out of the question in the current situation.

– Finland has already communicated its position to the IIHF: we will not play against Russia as long as the war of aggression against Ukraine continues, says Sami Kauhanen, the CEO of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, in a statement from the association.

Kauhanen also raises a significantly larger issue. According to him, Russia’s participation would jeopardize the entire World Championship tournament.

– The World Championships cannot be organized if Russia is included. A significant number of countries have refused to play against Russia, Kauhanen continues.

IIHF intends to discuss Russia’s situation with national ice hockey associations. It must determine whether Russia’s participation could be carried out in accordance with the CAS decision.

However, this investigation does not mean automatic entry into the World Championships. The Finnish Ice Hockey Association reminds that Russia cannot be included unless the conditions for organizing the tournament are met.

As for Belarus, the decision is already clear. IIHF confirmed on Saturday that the country will not participate in the 2027 men’s or under-20 World Championships.
