Jarmo Kekäläinen negotiated a huge trade – NHL megastar and a Finn were already close to switching teams

The Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres reportedly held advanced discussions regarding the potential trade of star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to Buffalo, but the final agreement never materialized, as the negotiations fell apart at the very end.

The Fourth Period editor David Pagnotta reports that the trade would have included a significant package. Winnipeg would have received the fourth overall pick in the NHL draft, goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, and an NHL-caliber player, believed to be Jack Quinn. The deal might have also included an additional player or another draft pick.

Various reasons have been suggested for the collapse of the negotiations. Some sources indicate that Winnipeg was not entirely satisfied with the offered return. According to another perspective, Sabres GM Jarmo Kekäläinen decided to withdraw from the negotiations himself, feeling that the price had become too high.

Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman, on the other hand, states that the situation had progressed unusually far, as Hellebuyck had already given his approval for the move to Buffalo.

Although the trade did not go through, the discussions may not be entirely over. The parties could return to the negotiating table later, but the situation is complicated by the fact that Buffalo has already used its fourth-round pick in the draft by selecting defenseman Daxon Rudolph.

However, Winnipeg is not rushing to find a solution. There is an understanding between the team and Hellebuyck that if a suitable trade cannot be found, the goaltender can start the season still with the Jets. In that case, the team would continue to explore trade opportunities throughout the season.

The collapse of the trade has also sparked interest from other teams. The Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly still closely monitoring Hellebuyck’s situation.
