Oulu Kärpät has made a one-year Liiga contract with 18-year-old forward prospect Viljo Kähkönen.

Kähkönen is a product of HJK, but he moved to the Helsinki IFK organization at a young age. He has played a few Liiga matches with HIFK, but in the past season, he had his biggest role with the U20 team. HIFK unexpectedly terminated Kähkönen’s contract in May.

Kärpät’s junior sports director Jukka Aho sees a lot of potential in Kähkönen and considers him among the top names of his age group.

– Viljo is a good and versatile two-way center who brings more skill and tough competition to Kärpät. It’s great to have one of the most promising players of his age group in Oulu, Aho says in a statement.

Kähkönen has been involved in several junior national teams and he won a bronze medal with the Finnish team at the youth Olympics in Gangwon in 2024. In the tournament, he also served as an alternate captain.
