Former NHL forward successfully returned after more than four years away – earned a new contract now
Swedish forward Jacob Josefson, 34, had to end his career in 2022 due to concussions. He last played in January 2021.
However, Josefson managed to make a comeback this season after a four and a half year break. He signed a one-year contract with SHL club Djurgården, which he also represented before his retirement from 2018-2021.
Josefson has played 24 games this season with a scoring record of 5+10=15, so his return to professional hockey has been successful. As a result, Djurgården announced this week that they have made a two-year extension with Josefson, which runs until the spring of 2028.
– The entire sports management and I are really happy that “Josef” is able to play hockey again, which he loves and had to take a long break from. Having him with us this season has been a big deal, and the fact that the return has been so successful warms my heart, commented Djurgården’s sports director Niklas Wikegård in the club’s statement.
Josefson has played 315 regular season games (20+44=64) and six playoff games (0+1) in the NHL representing the New Jersey Devils and the Buffalo Sabres. He has also represented Sweden in the World Championships in 2015.
