Canada misbehaved in the World Championships: the captain slapped the opponent’s backside and the handshake was missed.
The Canadian U20 team has attracted attention for its behavior at the U20 World Championships.
Canada played its first match of the tournament last night. The opponent was the Czech Republic.
In the last minute of the match, Canada’s captain Porter Martone decided the game by scoring the final goal to make it 7-5, putting the puck into an empty net. Martone was excited about the goal and went on to slap a Czech player on the backside.
The officiating crew noticed Martone’s stunt. As a result, the captain was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Canada’s poor behavior continued even after the match. The team left the ice without shaking hands with the Czech players. The Canadian national team responded to the incident by issuing an official apology.
– After last night’s game, the Canadian U20 team skated off the ice before shaking hands with the Czech team. Hockey Canada takes full responsibility for this mistake and we have apologized to the team, the Czech Ice Hockey Federation, and the IIHF for our error, the Canadian hockey federation states.
