Turn behind the scenes: League club tearing up player contract
The paths of Pelicans and Swedish forward Lukas Zetterberg are seemingly parting ways before the end of the contract.
According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the parties are terminating their existing player contract. According to the newspaper, the 29-year-old forward is returning to his youth club Västerås IK.
Expressen reports that the contract has not yet been signed, but the transfer is considered very likely.
Zetterberg signed a two-year contract with Pelicans before last season. He managed to play one season with the Lahti club and recorded 10 points in 26 games in the Liiga with 6+4=10.
According to Expressen, Västerås wants the forward back on their team, the player himself is eager to return to the club, and Pelicans is also willing to let him go. Additionally, it is reported that a sponsor behind the Swedish club is ready to finance the transfer of the experienced forward.
Västerås is Zetterberg’s youth club, which he has represented at three different stages of his career. During his second stint, he made a strong impression and joined the SHL team Brynäs, but he did not secure a permanent spot in Sweden’s top league.
For most of his career, Zetterberg has played in Sweden’s Allsvenskan. He has scored 217 points in 392 games in the league with 112+105=217. In his best season, the forward scored 24 goals and collected a total of 46 points.
Additionally, Zetterberg has played 12 SHL games and 25 games in the Czech top league during his career.
