Tappara’s head coach Kari Jalonen‘s announcement on Monday about retiring immediately came as a shock to the team’s GM Janne Vuorinen.

Vuorinen describes in interviews given to various media that Jalonen’s announcement came to him like a bolt from the blue.

– This was a bombshell for me too when I heard about it this morning. It was a direct and emotional conversation, but I won’t go into more detail, Vuorinen commented to Ilta-Sanomat.

According to Vuorinen, there were no external signs of the motivation decline that Jalonen himself mentioned visible in the team’s daily life.

– At least nothing was noticeable externally. He worked hard in daily life and pushed the team forward, Vuorinen states.

Ylee in an interview emphasized that Jalonen is among the best head coaches in Finland’s history of the sport.

– He is one of the greatest ice hockey coaches in Finland’s history and has had a wonderful career – hats off to him, Vuorinen said.

– I can’t say what he has been going through internally, but outwardly he has handled his job meticulously and worked long hours, developing and leading the team’s operations, Vuorinen noted.

The 66-year-old Jalonen, who has had a long career in Finland and abroad, moved to be the head coach of Tappara for this season on a two-year contract.

Tappara announced that Fredrik Norrena, who had already been part of the coaching team, will serve as the head coach for the remainder of the season.
