The star defender of the Lions is being taken to Jokerit – IL: Ville Heinola’s mysterious response to the rumors
Ville Heinola is among the key defensemen for the Lions in the ice hockey World Championships starting in Switzerland on Friday. The defender has a significant opportunity ahead of him regarding contract negotiations for next season, as his career will not continue in the Winnipeg Jets organization.
The 25-year-old skilled defenseman, who played only five NHL games last season, has been in the midst of trade rumors in recent days. According to Urheilucast, Heinola has reportedly had advanced negotiations regarding a move to Jokerit, which is returning to the Liiga. The NHL and the Swiss league are still options as well.
Iltalehti asked Heinola on Tuesday about possible connections to Jokerit. The defender did not elaborate on his situation, although his response suggested there may be some truth to the Jokerit rumors.
– I have no comment on that, Heinola stated.
However, the NHL remains the Finnish defender’s top goal.
– The NHL is my number one priority. I want to play there. Let’s focus on these championships first and worry about what happens next, the defender clarified.
However, quick solutions regarding contract matters are not likely.
– Take it easy, take it easy, the defender added as he prepares for his first adult World Championships.
Heinola played most of the past season in the AHL. With the Manitoba Moose, he recorded 21 points in 44 games with 3 goals and 18 assists.
