The League regular season match between TPS and Sport scheduled for last Friday was ultimately not played at all due to ice problems at the Turku Gatorade Center after a long delay.

The start of the match was first postponed, but the ice could not be restored to playable condition. It was ultimately determined that the safety of the players could not be guaranteed, after which the decision to postpone the match was made with the League’s permission and based on the referees’ assessment.

TPS announced in a statement released on Wednesday that the problems were due to an installation error of the ice maintenance machine.

– Oversight and inspection failed in that the problem was not detected in time. We have gone through the matter with the facility management’s maintenance and will make changes in both preparation and oversight, says Kari Rantala, CEO of Koy Turun Monitoimihalli.

This was by no means the first time the condition of the ice at the Gatorade Center has received criticism. In a survey published by the players’ association in spring 2025, as many as 28 percent of league players rated the ice in Turku as the weakest in the league, including all locations.

The match between TPS and Sport that was not played will take place on Sunday, November 29, at 5:00 PM.
