The league club hired the head coach of the Under-20 Lions!
Vaasan Sport has hired Lauri Mikkola as its new head coach for the 2026–28 seasons.
Mikkola has served as the head coach of the Finnish under-20 national team since the 2023–24 season. He led the Young Lions to a fourth place in last year’s World Championships and to a silver medal in the previous tournament.
– Next season’s playing style will definitely be active. Strong teamwork and playing as a unit. Everyone must react quickly to the game and be fast together. Of course, the game also includes various rhythms, and managing them is key, Mikkola says in Sport’s statement.
Mikkola’s assistant coaches will be Jussi Tapio and Kimmo Kuhta, who worked with him in the Young Lions.
Mikkola has previously coached Kärpät at both junior and Liiga levels. He celebrated winning the SM gold as an assistant coach in the spring of 2018.
He will become Sport’s fifth head coach in two and a half years.
