Kärpät lost to HPK in Hämeenlinna on Saturday with a score of 3-6. With this loss, Kärpät’s chances for a playoff spot have practically dwindled, as they have three games left and are nine points away from a playoff position.

Even after two periods, Kärpät led the game 3-2, but HPK turned the game around in the final period. First, Anrei Hakulinen equalized on a power play just over a minute into the period. Kärpät challenged the situation for offside, but the goal was approved and Kärpät received a new penalty for delaying the game. Only 12 seconds later, Cameron Wright scored the winning goal. HPK struck two empty-net goals at the end.

Kärpät published a picture on social media after the match, which indicated that Hakulinen’s equalizing goal was preceded by an offside. Kärpät’s head coach Petri Karjalainen was heated about the situation in the press conference after the match and expressed his direct words.

– I don’t really know how to phrase these words. We don’t take anything away from the home team. It was a very tough game where one team scored more goals and earned their win that way. But it really frustrates me how that decision comes about. Goodness. We have been burdened with the challenge responsibility. Nowadays, offside calls are not blown because there is always the option to say challenge it. Then when we challenge the offside, we can’t find the right angles or systems, Karjalainen lamented.

– It takes us 20 seconds to show that it is offside. The referees or whoever decides, I don’t even know who makes these decisions, decide that it wasn’t offside, the goal is accepted, and Kärpät is given an additional penalty for the unsuccessful challenge. Which wasn’t unsuccessful, but the gentlemen don’t bother to look at those things. HPK took full advantage of this. It really stings, Karjalainen continued.

For HPK, the victory was important for the playoff battle. The team is currently in the last playoff-qualifying position at 12th place and is now four points ahead of TPS.
