The coach who was dismissed from the league found a new job – another Finnish name unexpectedly withdrew
The Austrian team Pioneers Vorarlberg, playing in the multinational ICEHL league, has hired new Finnish expertise for its coaching team. Tony Virta will start as the team’s assistant coach.
Virta, 54, served as the assistant coach for Pelicans in the Liiga for the last two seasons. He was dismissed from his position last November.
Throughout his coaching career, Virta has also been an assistant coach for HPK in the Liiga, for Jokerit in the KHL, and for HC Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia.
The coaching team of Pioneers Vorarlberg experienced last-minute changes regarding Finnish names. Janne Grönvall was supposed to serve as the head coach next season, but he had to withdraw from the position last week due to personal reasons.
Originally appointed as the assistant coach, Marko Ojanen will take over the head coach position due to Grönvall’s situation. Virta will join him as his assistant.
Among the Finnish players, Pioneers Vorarlberg will see defender Roni Allen as well as forwards Ville Immonen and Marcus Kallionkieli next season.
