Sporting great Doug Shedden dismisses the club manager’s claims to IL: “No idea”
The last-placed Sport in the league announced on Wednesday that Doug Shedden would leave his position as head coach immediately.
The sports director of the Vaasa team, Ari-Pekka Pajuluoma, commented on Shedden’s departure from the club just under two months later, claiming that in addition to the poor sporting results, there was “something personal” behind the Canadian coach’s exit.
Shedden, 64, who suggested the termination of the contract himself, is astonished by Pajuluoma’s statements in an interview he gave to Iltalehti.
– I have no idea what he is talking about, the coach states.
According to Shedden himself, the main reason for his decision is the removal of the league qualifiers from this year’s calendar. With Shedden’s voluntary departure, Sport also saves a significant amount in his salary costs.
– The league rules changed so that no one will be relegated this season. Therefore, it was an easy decision to make, as I wasn’t coming back next fall anyway.
– Sport saves money and they get to give a chance to a young coach (Jussi Tapio), Shedden explains his decision.
Sport has won only one of its last eight games. The team is expected to start player clearance sales at any moment. At least the team’s Swedish players are likely to attract interest from other league clubs as well as elsewhere in Europe.
