Saku Koivu’s 31-year-old Liiga record goes to the scrap heap
Tappara’s young star Benjamin Rautiainen continued his impressive form in the Liiga on Saturday.
The 20-year-old forward scored 1+1 in the match against SaiPa and set a new Liiga record. Rautiainen broke the 31-year-old under-21 points record, which had previously belonged to Saku Koivu.
Rautiainen entered Saturday’s away game with a total of 74 points, being tied with Koivu at that point. However, his two-point night made him the sole record holder, and he now leads the legendary Leijonat player by two points. Tappara still has one regular season game left to play.
Exceptional scoring pace
Rautiainen’s scoring streak is exceptional by 21st century standards. In this millennium, only Kai Nurminen and Janne Pesonen have collected more points in a single Liiga season, both scoring 78 points in their time.
That milestone is now realistically within Rautiainen’s reach. The Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick has recorded an impressive 24+52=76 in 58 games this season.
Tappara, who has secured the regular season victory, will play their last game on Tuesday against HPK, who are fighting for a playoff spot.
