Tappara recently strengthened its defense with Tommi Kivistö, but the experienced defender was reportedly also on the radar of Jokerit. This was reported by Esko Seppänen on Urheilucast.

According to Seppänen, Jokerit had been in discussions with Kivistö for several weeks before the defender ended up in Tampere. The negotiations were already underway while Tomek Valtonen was serving as the head coach of the Helsinki club.

– It was about three or four weeks, and suddenly Kivistö is playing for Tappara, Seppänen wondered.

Kivistö was without a team at the beginning of the season until Tappara made a two-month contract with him. The contract also includes an option for an extension.

Seppänen considers Tappara’s acquisition successful but wonders especially why Kivistö ultimately did not end up with Jokerit.

– The biggest surprise for me in all this is that, now that everything has been said and done, is how Kivistö’s playing bag was not found in the Jokerit arena.

Seppänen does not have certain information on why the discussions between Jokerit and Kivistö did not lead to a contract.

Kivistö is already familiar with Jokerit, as he has represented the Helsinki club in both the SM-liiga and the KHL.
