Rumors are intensifying: will Edmonton succeed in acquiring a goaltending reinforcement?

The Edmonton Oilers’ season has started poorly. The team’s biggest problem has been goaltending, for which the Oilers are rumored to be seeking a solution in the form of a new addition. Recently, the hottest name in trade rumors has been Pittsburgh Penguins’ Tristan Jarry, 30.

On Saturday, the trade rumors gained more momentum. 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast reported as certain that Jarry is moving to the Oilers and that Pittsburgh will retain half of the goaltender’s $5.375 million annual salary.

The podcast’s announcement has not held true so far, but the rumor garnered so much attention that NHL reporter Elliotte Friedman also commented on the matter. According to him, there has been a lot of movement around Jarry in recent days, and that Edmonton has been genuinely interested in the goaltender.

At the same time, Friedman assessed that trading Jarry to Edmonton may not be possible. Pittsburgh is not interested in retaining the goaltender’s salary, and on the other hand, the Penguins have been performing so well that the team has little interest in trading their hot goaltender.

Friedman also revealed that Edmonton is not offering Stuart Skinner in the trade, but would like Jarry as his partner.

Thus, Edmonton would need to offer a package in the trade that would have the same impact on the salary cap as Jarry’s. Otherwise, there would be no room for the goaltender’s contract. Even if the Oilers are interested in Jarry, the trade may be nearly impossible to execute due to salary issues.

Jarry has played excellently this season. In 12 games, he has recorded nine wins with a save percentage of 91.3.
