Perspective: The distance from sensation to catastrophe is short – will KooKoo end up with a drastic solution?
Last spring, KooKoo, which sensationally reached silver, is currently swimming in deep waters. Tappara defeated KooKoo in Wednesday’s Liiga round with a score of 3-0, which also meant KooKoo’s ninth consecutive loss.
KooKoo has thus lost all its early-season matches in Liiga. It has collected only one point, scored 15 goals, and conceded as many as 40. Harsh numbers.
In Kouvola, they were just one win away from the Finnish championship in May. Now, nearly the same team finds itself, just under five months later, in a situation where it languishes at the bottom of the Liiga.
KooKoo has not experienced major changes compared to last season. Of course, it lost important players such as Jesper Ahlroth, Kalle Loponen, Jimi Suomi, and Otto Paajanen. In their place came Arttu Pelli, Aleksi Pakaslahti, and Axel Holmström. The core of the team has largely remained the same.
Even last season’s sensation, goalkeeper Eetu Randelin, has not been able to convince in the first matches.
This season, the stakes in Liiga are exceptionally high due to the risk of relegation. Since the bottom three will drop to the B-league next season, there must be genuine concern for the future in Kouvola at this point.
Head coach Jouko Myrrä must also be brought into the spotlight. The man has made a strong impact in Kouvola over the last two seasons, but the start of this season has been a disaster. Nine matches is already a significant sample, and since all have been losses, Myrrä’s position must also be examined.
Will KooKoo make a drastic decision and fire Myrrä? It is reasonable for the club management to now assess Myrrä’s position as well.
There is still plenty of time to turn things around, as KooKoo has 55 matches left in the regular season. But change must happen quickly.
If before the season started, there was speculation about which Liiga clubs were most likely to fire their head coaches, Myrrä was one of the least likely options. We have quickly reached a point where this scenario is entirely possible.
