The league made questionable history on Saturday.

KooKoo lost to Pelicans 3-6. The defeat was the tenth in a row for last season’s silver medalist right at the beginning of the season.

Such a thing has only been seen once in the history of the league. Vaasan Sport started the 1975–76 season with ten consecutive losses. It has been 51 years since then.

KooKoo has good conditions to break the record. The team’s game is completely chaotic, and next up is the second-placed Jukurit.

On Saturday, KooKoo’s performance revealed everything essential about the team’s level. KooKoo had 11 minutes of power play against Pelicans but failed to score a single goal. Pelicans, on the other hand, crafted one short-handed goal.

KooKoo’s penalty killing also did not go well. Pelicans’ weak power play succeeded twice in the match.

Even in even-strength play, the Kouvola team’s performance leaves much to be desired. The aggressive play repeatedly leads to free breakaways for the opponent. Defending their own goal area is also at a very low level.

After ten lost games, head coach Jouko Myrrä‘s position is precarious. Will we see another coaching dismissal in the league?

Myrrä’s shield is KooKoo’s playing style. Is there a coach available mid-season who can better coach fast-paced vertical hockey? Or will KooKoo suddenly change its playing identity towards puck possession?

Neither option is certainly appealing, but the current situation in Kouvola cannot continue.
