JYP has signed a two-year player contract with 26-year-old defender Juuso Arola. The club announced on Thursday that Arola is moving to Jyväskylä from the Swiss HC Fribourg, where he celebrated winning the league championship.

Arola moved to Switzerland during last season from Mikkelin Jukurit, who had to make financial decisions regarding their roster. In Fribourg, he ended up playing one regular season game and eight playoff games, recording 0+5.

JYP’s sports director Simo Mälkiä believes that Arola’s development curve will continue to rise in the Liiga in Jyväskylä.

– Arola has made incredible strides in his career over the last two seasons, first breaking into a significant role in the Liiga and then moving to the Swiss League. We believe that his development will continue at JYP, Mälkiä said in a statement.

The Pelicans’ product played 49 regular season games with Jukurit last season, where he collected 5+24. Over his Liiga career, he has played a total of 111 games in four seasons.

Mälkiä describes the new addition as a puck-moving and boldly playmaking defender with a strong motivation to develop further.

– Arola is a puck-moving defender with a bold and active style of play. He wants to take responsibility for the game and has a strong desire and hunger to continue developing as a player, Mälkiä added.
