NHL: Shake-up: Champion coach out
The Toronto Maple Leafs are now blowing in a new direction. The major team that missed the NHL playoffs announced on Wednesday that they have fired head coach Craig Berube. Berube had coached the Maple Leafs for two seasons.
This season, Toronto finished a staggering 20 points away from the Eastern Conference playoff line, which triggered a major upheaval within the organization. The team had already changed its GM earlier, when Brad Treliving was replaced by John Chayka.
The new GM justified Berube’s firing with a change in the organization’s direction.
– Craig is a great coach and an even better person. This decision reflects the organization’s change and new beginning, and it does not assess Craig as a coach, Chayka commented in the team’s statement.
The 60-year-old Berube is a respected name in the NHL. He has previously coached the Philadelphia Flyers and the St. Louis Blues.
Berube is particularly remembered for the spring of 2019, when he led the Blues sensationally from the NHL’s bottom position all the way to the Stanley Cup championship.
