The Toronto Maple Leafs’ fortunes in the NHL took a severe downturn when the team let their long-time star winger Mitch Marner hit the free market last summer.

The departure of the hometown boy, who had represented the team for nine seasons, to the Vegas Golden Knights left a gaping hole both on and off the ice.

The former head coach of the team, Craig Berube, who was let go a year after Marner, admits that Marner’s departure had a significant impact on the team’s poor performances last season.

– I think he was our emotional leader, Berube admits on the Simmer’s Morning Skate podcast.

– Mitch was the energy guy for the team. He brought energy and emotion to our game every night. Also in practice. A loud guy who talked a lot on the bench during games and in practice and brought energy to our efforts.

– He encouraged the guys. He was awesome. It was a real pleasure to coach him, Berube recalls the 2024-25 season when the duo was together in Toronto.

After Marner’s departure, the Maple Leafs collapsed badly last season. The team missed the playoffs for the first time since the spring of 2016.

In the recently concluded season, Marner led his new team, Vegas, to the Stanley Cup finals.
