NHL: A major trade involving four players!
The NHL’s trade season kicked into high gear on Tuesday when the Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers executed the most significant player trade of the summer so far. A total of four players and one draft pick were involved in the trade.
Moving to Philadelphia in the deal are goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit. Toronto, on the other hand, receives goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and the Flyers’ third-round draft pick for this summer’s NHL draft.
From the goaltending perspective, this is an interesting swap between two relatively similarly aged netminders. The 26-year-old Ersson played 33 games for the Flyers last season with a save percentage of 87.0 and an average of 3.12 goals against. Woll, who is moving to Philadelphia, recorded 39 games for the Maple Leafs with a 3.34 goals against average and a save percentage of 89.9.
There was also an interesting exchange on the defensive side. The 24-year-old Andrae, moving to Toronto, played 61 games for the Flyers last season, recording 2 goals and 11 assists for a total of 13 points. Benoit, heading to the Flyers, logged 71 games with 0 goals and 6 assists.
This trade also marks the first truly significant move by the Maple Leafs’ new general manager John Chayka.
