The league echoed with a news bomb over the weekend when HIFK announced that Jori Lehterä is ending his playing career mid-season. However, Lehterä himself stated in his Instagram post that he does not promise with one hundred percent certainty that his career is over, as his mind may still change.

In his update, Lehterä mentioned that he is stepping away from HIFK’s activities and needs a timeout, which has increased speculation and shaken the rumor mill.

According to the latest information from MTV Sports, the contract between Lehterä and HIFK has been terminated, meaning there are no longer any ties between the parties. Therefore, HIFK has no say in where Lehterä can continue playing if he decides to do so. It is thus possible that Lehterä could be seen even this season in another Liiga team.

Lehterä played four games for HIFK this season, with stats of 0+1. He played his last game last Wednesday and was no longer in HIFK’s lineup on Saturday.

MTV Sports expert Juhamatti Aaltonen speculated on Lehterä’s decision and HIFK’s current situation during the Liiga week. He notes that the situation appears confusing from the outside.

– To me, it certainly indicates that things are really bad. There must be some kind of deadlock either with the coach or the club, or somewhere in there. And it has likely been brewing for a longer time. For such an experienced and accomplished guy, someone who has played in tougher leagues, to say “I’m leaving,” Aaltonen says.

HIFK’s start to the season has been poor. They have lost four out of five games.

– This is definitely the worst possible situation for Olli Jokinen as well. Last year was a terrible season, and now the game hasn’t started well in any way. And now a signal from a star player that he is leaving because things aren’t going well. There is indeed a lot of pressure on the coach, another expert Karri Kivi says.
