MTV Sports: A drastic change to the league – relegation spots will be decided in a ruthless manner
The league is preparing for a historic transition next season as the league system changes to a two-tier format. According to MTV Sports more teams may lose their place in the top division without traditional relegation playoffs.
The Super Season 2026–27 will serve as a transition phase, and from the 2027–28 season, 14 teams will play in the upper tier and 10 in the lower tier. According to preliminary plans, three or four clubs will be relegated directly based on regular season standings, depending on the number of promoted teams from Mestis. The promotion of Helsinki Jokerit is at least certain.
The league board is currently finalizing a proposal for the implementation of playoffs and relegation. According to the model, individual unfortunate matches will no longer determine league placement, and every point in the regular season will be crucial. Relegated clubs will move to a new B-league, which will gather teams from the League and Mestis starting from the 2027–28 season.
