Mitch Marner had another offer on the table in the NHL – new information from a reporter
NHL superstar Mitch Marner changed teams this summer after the skilled player, who had represented the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout his career, signed a long-term contract with the Vegas Golden Knights.
In addition to Vegas, at least the Anaheim Ducks were reported to be seriously pursuing Marner. Ultimately, the skilled forward ended up signing an eight-year contract with an annual salary of 12 million dollars to join Vegas.
According to insider reporter Eric Stephens, the rumors of the Ducks making a 14 million dollar annual salary guaranteed offer to Marner were false. Stephens stated that there was indeed interest from the Ducks in Marner, but the team was ultimately not willing to pay the annual salary that was claimed in the media.
In the end, Marner signed a maximum-length, eight-year contract with the Maple Leafs, after which Toronto traded the player to Vegas as soon as the free agency market opened on July 1st.
Last season, Marner broke the 100-point barrier in the regular season for the first time. The Canadian recorded 102 points with 27 goals and 75 assists in 81 games.
