Ottawa Senators’ Finnish defenseman Lassi Thomson, 25, may return to Europe for the remainder of the season.

The Swedish newspaper Expressen reports that Thomson’s agent has been in negotiations with representatives from the SHL team Malmö Redhawks regarding a transfer. Thomson has a valid contract with Malmö.

The turn of events is surprising, as it was reported in the fall that a return for Thomson would be unlikely. According to Expressen, Thomson will make a decision in the coming weeks.

Thomson played 50 games for Malmö last season, recording 17+12=29 points. The Finn returned to the Senators’ organization for this season, but he has not accumulated any NHL games.

In the AHL, Thomson has totaled 5 points in 19 games this fall with 4+1=5.
