The New Jersey Devils have made a rare offer sheet proposal for Utah Mammoth forward Barrett Hayton. The value of the offer is 4.775 million dollars for one year.

Utah Mammoth now has to decide whether to accept the offer and keep the player or let him move to the New Jersey Devils. If Utah does not respond to the offer, the Devils will acquire Hayton, and Utah will receive a second-round draft pick as compensation.

The situation is difficult for Utah, as accepting the offer would come with a restriction: the team would not be able to trade Hayton during the next season.

– The crux of Utah’s decision is this: if they respond to Barrett Hayton’s offer sheet from New Jersey, they cannot trade him for a year, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer, Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston described the situation.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun finds the Devils’ move amusing.

– The Devils pulled quite a dirty trick on Utah. It’s a funny situation.

The crux of the decision facing Utah: If they match Barrett Hayton's offer sheet from New Jersey, they're not allowed to trade for one year, which would walk him right to unrestricted free agency next summer.
