KalPa organized a huge surprise – eliminated the star-studded CHL champion from the continuation
KalPa responded to the Champions Hockey League’s Wednesday shocker by eliminating the defending CHL champion Zürich Lions in the first round of the playoffs.
KalPa defeated the Swiss club at home on Wednesday with a score of 4-2 and advanced to the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 8-6. The first leg ended in a tie at 4-4.
The standout for the Kuopio team was Teemu Hartikainen, who scored two goals. Other goals on Wednesday were scored by Cade Borchardt and Veikka Mononen.
Eliminating Zürich, who have won the last two Swiss championships, was an impressive feat for KalPa, as the Swiss team is filled with incredible players at the European level. The team includes Lions captain Mikko Lehtonen, as well as Sven Andrighetto, Denis Malgin, Dean Kukan, Yannick Weber, Pontus Åberg, and the country’s top goaltender Simon Hrubec.
Finnish teams are strongly represented in the CHL quarter-finals, as both Lukko and Ilves also made it to the top eight. Ilves will face Luleå in the quarter-finals, Lukko will meet EV Zug, and KalPa will play against Brynäs.
