Former ice hockey star Juhamatti Aaltonen dreams of a coaching career. The forward, who ended his playing career in spring 2025, revealed that he aims to become a head coach of a Liiga team in the future.

Aaltonen shared his plans on Monday during the MTV Urheilu Liigaviikko program. The former top forward, currently working as an expert for the channel, sees television work as an opportunity to prepare for his future coaching career.

– Yes, I would like to be a coach. This (expert work) is also done because someday I will coach somewhere. When the right place and time come, Aaltonen revealed.

Aaltonen was asked directly in the program if his dream is to one day be the head coach of a Liiga team.

– Yes, Aaltonen answered.

In the same broadcast, Karri Kivi expressed enthusiasm for Aaltonen’s plans. Kivi, who has won the Finnish championship and the junior world championship as a coach, believes Aaltonen has excellent potential to succeed behind the bench as well.

– I won’t let “Juhis” leave that card unplayed. He undoubtedly has top talent for coaching. He has to go, otherwise I’ll carry him, Kivi ignited.

Kivi’s own future as a coach also came up in the program. Currently focused on expert tasks, Kivi is not actively seeking a coaching position, but he is still interested in returning to coaching roles.

– I am not actively looking for anything at the moment, but hopefully someday there will be a situation where I coach somewhere, Kivi said.
