John Tortorella’s successful tenure as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights is coming to an end. The veteran coach, surprisingly hired behind the Vegas bench at the end of March, confirms that he will leave the team after the season, regardless of the outcome of the Stanley Cup finals.

– Everyone knew when I came in that after June, my work with Vegas would be done. We made that decision in our first meeting with GM Kelly McCrimmon, Tortorella told reporter Elliotte Friedman.

The revelation is exceptional, as under Tortorella’s leadership, Vegas has marched all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. The team is just two wins away from its second championship in history.

The future of the 67-year-old coaching legend in the NHL is otherwise still shrouded in uncertainty.

– I haven’t even thought about it yet. I’m so immersed in my work here, Tortorella responded vaguely to Friedman’s inquiries about the continuation of his coaching career.

Tortorella was hired in Vegas at the end of March to replace the fired Bruce Cassidy. The decision sparked considerable discussion at the time, but the controversial coach has managed to silence the doubters by leading the team right to the brink of a Stanley Cup victory.
