Ismo Lehkonen made a harsh comment about Doug Shedden: “Hopefully the lid stays on”
The news about Doug Shedden returning to the league as the head coach of Sport was among last week’s major headlines in domestic hockey media.
The hiring of the 64-year-old Canadian, known from the Lions, HIFK, and Jokerit, came as a complete surprise even to hockey expert Ismo Lehkonen.
– There will definitely be some color. Shedden is an emotional guy. Playing in battles, playing for loose pucks… It even gives the green light for excesses. You have to go to the wrong side of the gray area, Lehkonen commented on Shedden’s coaching style in the Kalju Corner podcast.
Lehkonen is not entirely convinced about the tactical skills of the Canadian captain regarding 21st-century hockey.
– In Central Europe, it didn’t really bring much in terms of gameplay. I’m curious to see what it brings to Sport’s experienced foreign department.
– During Juuso Hahli’s time, I don’t think Sport played structurally poorly. I was even surprised by how smart hockey they played. The results just didn’t come in the early season. It’s a shame, Lehkonen lamented the fate of Hahli, who was dismissed from the head coach position.
Regarding Shedden’s role for the remainder of the season with Sport, the expert hopes for one thing above all.
– Hopefully, Shedden doesn’t lose control. Let’s just say, he should keep the lid on and stay as dry as possible, Lehkonen concluded.
