Ilta-Sanomat reports that former ice hockey player Jere Karalahti, 51, has been sentenced to 1 year and 9 months of conditional imprisonment for a serious drug offense. The sentence is not yet final.

At the Helsinki District Court, Karalahti was charged with two serious drug offenses and one basic drug offense.

According to the court, Karalahti had purchased 80 grams of cocaine and 300 grams of amphetamine for his own use. However, the court did not find that it had been proven that he had distributed drugs or gained financial benefit from them.

According to Karalahti’s lawyer Mikko Ruuttunen, the former player does not intend to appeal the verdict.

– He is satisfied with the verdict. He says that the matter was resolved correctly this way. He is of course relieved, as the charges were much heavier, Ruuttunen tells IS.

Ruuttunen stated that the district court resolved all key disputed issues in accordance with Karalahti’s position.

– The amounts are what Karalahti admitted. The prosecutor’s claim regarding distribution has been completely dismissed and the penalty is conditional. All questions have been resolved correctly, Ruuttunen explained.
