The start of Ilves’ season has been a disaster. After 13 matches played, the tufted ears share the last place with HIFK, both having 12 league points.
Still, Ilves has faith in head coach Tommi Niemelä. According to Ilta-Sanomat, Ilves has signed a two-season extension with Niemelä.
In his first season, Niemelä led Ilves to a bronze medal. The ongoing season is the last of his current contract.
Earlier in his career, Niemelä coached the Pikkuleijonat to a world championship and Pelicans to a Finnish silver medal.
