Ilves’ star player continues his career in North America
The Czech goalkeeper Jakub Malek, who has played for Ilves for the last three seasons, continues his career in North America.
The 23-year-old Malek revealed to the Czech site iSport.cz that he is aiming for a spot in the New Jersey Devils organization.
– I am looking forward to it. This is a completely new opportunity for me. I am happy to join a team at that level – it’s exciting to see what happens. The three years spent in Finland prepared me well for this. Moving to North America was my original plan, Malek said to the site excitedly.
In the Devils organization, Malek’s path to the NHL is behind a difficult road. The Devils have contracts with experienced Jakub Markström and Jake Allen, making it hard to get responsibility in the NHL without injuries.
Malek was one of the best goalkeepers in the league last season. The Czech national team goalkeeper played 33 regular season games with an impressive save percentage of 91.0.
Next season, Ilves will see Malek’s countryman Dominik Pavlat in goal, as well as Roope Taponen, who was acquired from HIFK.
