Huge contract news from JYP!
JYP has signed comprehensive extensions for the next season with head coach Petri Matikainen and assistant coach Santeri Heiskanen.
Additionally, strength coach Ville-Veikko Pohjanvirta has signed an extension. The contracts of coaching staff Valtteri Salo and Tomi Pettinen are also valid for the next season.
Matikainen, 58, is leading JYP for his first season. The team is currently fourth in the standings, having collected 28 points from 14 games.
– I couldn’t even think of anything other than continuing. I am convinced of our players’ attitude and hunger to develop. I want to help our guys move forward, Matikainen says in JYP’s announcement.
– We have received confirmation that the changes we started in the spring under Petu’s leadership are going in the right direction. The team’s everyday operations are already visible in the games as an identity, says JYP’s sports director Simo Mälkiä.
– Petu is an experienced professional with whom it has been natural to work. It has been great to see the passion, desire, and drive he still has for hockey and JYP, Mälkiä praises.
Matikainen has previously coached Blues, HIFK, Pelicans in the Liiga, and briefly Kärpät at the end of last season. He has also served as head coach in the KHL, Switzerland, and Austria. Matikainen has also worked as an assistant coach for the Lions.
