HIFK has signed a one-year extension with Swedish goalkeeper Hugo Alnefelt. The 24-year-old Alnefelt played for HIFK on loan this season from SHL club HV71.

Alnefelt, who arrived in Helsinki mid-season, played 29 regular season games for HIFK with a save percentage of 87.7. His save percentage in the playoffs over five games was 90.1.

– I felt really welcome from the very first day, thanks to the fans, teammates, coaches, and everyone around the team. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed living and playing in Helsinki. I felt that this is a place where I can develop, Alnefelt commented on the club’s website.

– I am still motivated to improve and return to North America one day more experienced and skilled. I want to become as good a player as I can, and my goal is also to play for the national team one day, the goalkeeper continued.

HIFK’s goalkeeper coach Riku Helenius believes Alnefelt will take the next step in his career next season.

– Of course, there are still things that can be developed in a young goalkeeper, but it was great to see how Hugo was able to find a new level in his play towards the end of the season.

– I believe we have only seen a small part of Hugo’s abilities. There is a lot of potential that we will be looking to tap into in the upcoming season, Helenius commented.
