HIFK is left behind – Paavo Kohonen found a new club!
Joensuu Kiekko-Pojat has strengthened its goaltending department by signing a 1+1 year contract with Paavo Kohonen. The 23-year-old goaltender from Joensuu represented HIFK during the past season.
Kohonen is a product of Jokipojat’s junior organization, who started his professional career at Tampereen Tappara.
– It feels great to return to Joensuu after several years and to play in Mehtimäki in front of the Joensuu audience for a league spot and championship, Kohonen commented in a statement.
During the 2023–2024 season, Kohonen played in Mestistä for IPK and had a strong performance with 25 wins in 37 games. The team won the regular season, and Kohonen was awarded the best goaltender of the league.
In the following season, he played 14 games in the Liiga for Tappara and achieved three shutouts. However, his role diminished as the season progressed, and he moved to the top league in Slovakia with HK Dukla Trenčín for the remainder of the season. In the concluded season, Kohonen played 14 Liiga games for Helsingin IFK.
