Former JYP head coach at the helm of Mestis club – gets a notable partner
Mikko Heiskanen, who was dismissed from the head coach position of JYP’s Liiga team in December 2024, has found a new role in the Mestis league. Kiekko-Vantaa, playing in the second highest league, announced on Monday that they have hired Heiskanen as their new head coach with a two-year contract.
– I have really good feelings about starting work in Vantaa, where there is a forward-looking organization. I took a break from coaching and distanced myself a bit from ice hockey, but now I am full of energy, and we will work hard towards the B-league goal, commented the 40-year-old Heiskanen in the statement from the Vantaa club.
Heiskanen unexpectedly rose to the head coach position of JYP in the 2023-24 season when the club dismissed Jukka Rautakorpi and Ville Nieminen.
Heiskanen has previously served as a coach for KooKoo and KeuPa HT.
In Vantaa, Heiskanen will have former Liiga-level star defenseman Arto Laatikainen as his assistant coach. Laatikainen’s contract is also for two years.
