Familiar NHL forward from Ilves received an offer sheet – now a decision has been made
The New Jersey Devils’ attempt to acquire Barrett Hayton in the NHL fell through on Wednesday when the Utah Mammoth exercised their right to match the forward’s offer sheet.
The Devils offered the 26-year-old Canadian forward a one-year contract worth $4.775 million. However, Utah matched the offer by the deadline, and thus Hayton, who was a restricted free agent, will remain with the team for at least the upcoming season.
If Utah had not responded to the offer, Hayton would have moved to the Devils, with the Mammoth receiving a second-round draft pick as compensation.
Matching the offer sheet also brings restrictions for Utah. The team cannot trade Hayton for the next 12 months. If the parties do not reach a new contract extension during the upcoming season, the forward will have the opportunity next summer to test his value as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.
Hayton has represented the Arizona Coyotes and their affiliate Utah Mammoth throughout his entire NHL career. Last season, the forward played 67 regular-season games, recording 10 goals and 15 assists for a total of 25 points. In his entire NHL career, he has logged 328 games with a total of 155 (65+90) points.
For Finnish hockey fans, Hayton is also familiar from the Liiga. He played eight games for Ilves during the COVID season of 2020–21, collecting four assists in those matches.
