The plans for the next season of Mikkelin Jukurit could take an unfortunate turn if Alberts Smits manages to impress at the New York Rangers’ training camp.

Daily Faceoff reporter Steven Ellis estimates that the 18-year-old Latvian defenseman has a real chance to secure an NHL spot for the upcoming season.

– When the Rangers drafted Smits fifth overall, they knew there was a good chance he would join the main team right away, Ellis writes.

Daily Faceoff highlights Smits particularly in the competition for the Rangers’ third pair left defenseman position.

– Smits should definitely have the opportunity to take the third pair left defenseman spot from Matthew Robertson after the training camp, Ellis assesses.

For Jukurit, the Rangers’ decision is significant. If Smits manages to secure a spot on the NHL roster, the Mikkeli club will have to start the season without their important defenseman.

The 18-year-old defenseman, standing about 191 centimeters tall, played last season in Latvian teams at the junior World Championships, men’s World Championships, and the Olympics.

His strengths include especially puck handling and mobility. Daily Faceoff also highlights Smits’ confidence on the power play and the experience he has already accumulated in professional hockey at this stage.

If an NHL spot doesn’t materialize, the alternative is clear.

– If things don’t go according to plan, Smits can return to Finland and seek a significant role there.
