CHL made a big financial overhaul – clubs are set to receive a significantly larger pot than before

The Champions Hockey League, which has faced harsh criticism in Finland for its expensive participation fees, will significantly increase the amount of money distributed to clubs in the upcoming season.

The sum allocated for CHL prize and participation money will rise by as much as 26 percent this season.

Last season, a total of 2.54 million euros was distributed to clubs. Now the pot grows to 3.2 million euros.

Each participating club will receive 90,000 euros for their participation. Advancing to the playoffs increases the amount, as an additional 30,000 euros is paid for each subsequent playoff round.

The champion will receive a 100,000 euro winning bonus, while the runner-up in the final will get 50,000 euros. Additionally, the away team in the final will receive 50,000 euros for travel expenses, as well as a share of the match’s gross ticket revenue.

Financial relief for clubs

The financial reform will not be limited to the prize pool. In the future, clubs will be able to keep all the revenue from ticket and merchandise sales for their home games.

Moreover, clubs can commercially utilize up to six official CHL partners.

The changes are significant, especially for Finnish teams, whose heavy cost structure and the financial viability of participating in the league have drawn considerable criticism over the years.

This season, Finland is represented in the league by the reigning champion Tappara and last season’s other medal-winning teams KooKoo and SaiPa.

The new CHL season will kick off on Thursday, September 3rd.
