The New York Rangers have signed a three-year NHL entry-level contract with Latvian defenseman Alberts Smitsin.
Smits, 18, is the Rangers’ first-round fifth overall pick from this summer’s draft. He has played in Finland for the past few years. Over the last two seasons, Smits has represented Jukurit, where he recorded 6+7=13 points in 38 Liiga games last season.
At the end of last season, Smits was loaned to Germany’s EHC München. He managed to play five regular-season games with 0+1 points and 11 playoff games with 2+4 points.
Last season, Smits represented Latvia first at the under-20 World Championships (5 games, 1+4), then at the Olympics (4 games, 0+2), and later at the men’s World Championships (8 games, 0+4).
