Big contract on the table! Jarmo Kekäläinen made a crazy offer to his star forward.
Buffalo Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen is ready to commit to one of the team’s most important future names with a long and expensive contract.
According to insider information from The Fourth Period, Kekäläinen has offered forward Zach Benson a seven-year extension. The total value of the deal would be a staggering 49 million dollars, which would mean an annual salary of seven million dollars for the young Canadian forward.
If Benson accepts the contract offered by Kekäläinen, the just 21-year-old Canadian would immediately rise among Buffalo’s highest-paid forwards. Only Josh Norris and Tage Thompson would be ahead of him.
Benson had a breakout year in the NHL last season, recording 43 points with 13 goals and 30 assists in 65 regular-season games. The young player continued his strong performance in the playoffs, where he recorded 9 points with 5 goals and 4 assists in 13 games.
Benson’s entry-level contract ended this season, and the forward is currently a restricted free agent.
Kekäläinen’s aggressive offer suggests that the team is not offering a new contract to Alex Tuch, who is demanding a 10 million dollar annual salary. Buffalo has just under 12 million dollars of cap space available.
