Pori Ässät has signed a contract extension for the remainder of the season with forward Kasper Björkqvist, 29.

Björkqvist joined Ässät from Tampereen Ilves in August. The forward’s original contract expired at the end of October.

The versatile forward has risen to an important role in Ässät’s lineup, particularly in defensive situations. Björkqvist has taken responsibility, among other things, in penalty killing.

– Björkqvist has taken an important role at the core of the team and he does many winning things in his game, Ässät’s sports director Jarno Kultanen commented on the club’s website.

Björkqvist has played 19 Liiga games for Ässät this season, with a scoring record of 2+1=3.

Last season, the forward represented Ilves, where he recorded 12 points with 3+9=12 in 30 regular season games. In the playoffs, Björkqvist also played 13 games, scoring 1+3=4.

Originally from Espoo, Björkqvist has also played in the NHL during his career. The forward scored one goal in six NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Björkqvist was also part of Finland’s under-20 world championship team in 2016.
