A harsh statement from Vaasan Sport: "This season has gone wrong"

Vaasan Sport published a straightforward statement on Sunday morning, in which the club reviews the poorly executed season and examines the mistakes made by the club’s management.

– This season has gone wrong due to the decisions we have made. We tried to buy success quickly instead of building it sustainably. If we had known about the change in the league system before the start of the season, we would likely have acted differently. Hiring Shedden was an example of this: we wanted quick solutions instead of a long-term approach. We apologize, Sport’s statement begins.

For the 2026-27 season, Sport colorfully calls it “the most brutal league in history.” The claim is not unfounded. At the end of the season, three or four teams will be relegated to the B-league.

– We have made a decision: we will open up the possibility for player sales. We are not doing this because we are giving up on this season, but because we can build a team for next season that can withstand the most brutal league in history. The CEO will lead the player sales in a way that ensures we gain not only financial flexibility but also a good foundation for building next season’s team, as stated in Sport’s announcement.

– We want to act in a timely manner also so that we can see how our own young player group can rise and take responsibility during the remainder of the season with an eye on next season.

Finally, Sport hopes for belief and support from its fans and emphasizes why player sales are being initiated.

As the Christmas break approaches, Sport is at the bottom of the league. From their first 31 matches, the team has collected 29 points. There is a gap of 14 league points to the last playoff spot.
