Jussi Markkanen is leaving his position as the sports director of the League.

The League announces that Markkanen is stepping down from his role immediately. However, he will continue to assist the League office in sports matters in a background role until his successor is chosen. Markkanen has served as the League’s sports director for three full seasons, having started in the role in August 2023.

– Now is the time to step aside. We have accomplished a lot together in three years, the League’s format reform is in good shape, and my successor will be able to start their work with a clean slate, Markkanen commented in the League’s announcement.

Markkanen describes his three seasons in the League as professionally very interesting. According to him, there were many significant changes in the league and its structures during that time.

The League’s CEO Mikko Pulkkinen will handle the duties of the sports director together with the management team until a successor is found for Markkanen.

– I want to warmly thank Jussi for the contribution he has made to the League. During the three seasons, we have systematically reformed the League’s officiating and situation room, created several new monitoring systems, and integrated data and technology into our daily operations. Jussi has always been very committed to his work, Pulkkinen says.

The League will initiate an open search for a new sports director later. According to Pulkkinen, the goal is to have Markkanen’s successor selected after the turn of the year.
